Invoicing a UK client from France

Thirteen pages for a micro-entrepreneur whose clients are across the Channel: the nineteen mentions, the two VAT lines, pounds and Wise, what to declare and when, and a bilingual model invoice in sterling to copy.

Most of the invoices I see from English-speaking micro-entrepreneurs in France carry a VAT line that was correct in 2019. Nothing bounces, nobody writes, and the mistake sits in the records until an inspector or a future accountant reads it. This guide is the whole UK invoice, line by line, with the law behind each line and a finished model to copy.

It is written for a micro-entrepreneur under the franchise, with a note at each point where the answer differs once you are registered for VAT. Every figure and date was checked against the official French and UK sources on 5 September 2026, and the five points that remain unsettled are presented as unsettled rather than papered over.

What is in it

The short version, one page, for the person who will read nothing else: the five things to get right and the five things you do not need despite what the forums say.

The invoice itself: all nineteen mandatory mentions in a table, with what to write for each and why, as they stand for a micro-entrepreneur in 2026, and the four that arrive with e-invoicing in September 2027. What a missing mention costs, how the fine is applied, and why it almost never is.

VAT, in one page: the two separate reasons there is no VAT on the invoice, which of the two lines you use under the franchise and which once registered, why "Autoliquidation" is wrong, what you do not need (a VAT number, a DES), what the client does at their end, and the one UK-side trap for anyone selling automated digital products to British consumers.

Pounds, euros and Wise: invoicing in sterling and in English with the texts that allow it, what to declare and on which date, the exchange-rate method and why net of fees is wrong, the receipts register, and four things to know about running the business through Wise: form 3916, the dedicated-account rule, paying URSSAF from a Belgian IBAN, and EI in the account title.

Model invoice from Micro Admin guide 2: a French micro-entrepreneur invoicing a UK client in pounds, bilingual, with the VAT mention and the mandatory lines
The model invoice, in both languages, in pounds, with the margin numbers pointing back to the table of mentions. Names and numbers are made up; the lines are not.

The model invoice: a complete bilingual invoice from a franchise micro-entrepreneur to a UK company, every mention numbered back to the table, ready to copy into your invoicing tool as a template.

Does UK income count towards the VAT threshold? The question British freelancers ask most, with the July 2026 wording, the 2023 wording, and the letter to write to your tax office.

Mistakes British freelancers make, ten of them, from charging UK VAT to running a dormant UK limited company from a kitchen table in the Gard. Quotes, records and September 2027. And where the facts come from: every source, with the date it was read.

The questions people arrive with are answered on this site without charge: which VAT line, pounds and English, EI after your name, the €40 fee, declaring a Wise account, the exchange rate and the threshold. If those settle it for you, you do not need the guide. The guide is for having the whole invoice right in one sitting, the model to copy, and the sources to hand when someone tells you otherwise.

Is it for you?

Yes, if you are a micro-entrepreneur in France, you sell services rather than goods, and at least one of your clients is a business in the UK. No, if you run a société, or you already pay an accountant to do all of this. The guide is general information checked on a stated date; I am a British micro-entrepreneur, not an accountant, and I do not know your circumstances.

Questions

Is this the same as Guide 2 inside Micro Admin 2026/27?

Yes, the same file. Micro Admin is the three guides together with the URSSAF declaration tracker and the deadlines calendar, for €49. If you only have British clients and keep your own register, this guide alone is enough.

I am registered for VAT. Is it still for me?

Yes. Each point where the answer differs once you are registered says so, and the VAT line for your case is written out. The model invoice shows the franchise version with the one change marked.

What arrives, and how?

One PDF. It appears on the confirmation page the moment you pay, and the same link comes by email so you can find it again in six months.

Can I upgrade to the full kit later?

Yes. Email me with your Stripe receipt and I will send a link for the difference.

My clients are in Ireland or Germany as well.

That is the one case that needs the most care, and it has its own guide: Clients in the EU, and everywhere else. The kit has both.

What if it is not what I expected?

Email me within fourteen days and I will refund you. Tell me in a line what you were looking for and did not find; it goes into the January update.

Checkout is through Stripe, in euros, VAT included: €19, which is €15.83 plus €3.17 TVA. You have fourteen days from purchase to email me for a full refund, and that stands even though the legal withdrawal right for digital content ends the moment a download starts. If the file does not arrive or will not open, write to [email protected] and I will send it again. Your email address is used to send you the guide and its January update, and for nothing else.
